International Day of Peaceful Coexistence: The UN calls for respect and active dialogue

Living in the same world does not mean living in peace. On January 28, the UN General Assembly invites us to reflect on this through the International Day of Peaceful Coexistence. This commemoration, the purpose and details of which are available on the official International Day website, does not celebrate a distant ideal. Rather, it raises an urgent and concrete question: Do we really know how to live together? According to the UN, the answer requires more than goodwill; it demands active respect, a willingness to engage in dialogue, and a tangible commitment to diversity.

Promoted especially by Algeria, the date was proclaimed in 2024 in response to growing polarization and conflicts on an interconnected planet. The UN clarifies that peaceful coexistence is not merely a concept relating to the relations between states, as it was during the Cold War, but rather, it has become a practical necessity in our multicultural societies. It concerns the daily coexistence of cultures, religions, generations, and communities within our cities.
It is a call that goes from the global to the local

The UN aims to transform this date into a platform for human rights education and a catalyst for initiatives that prevent hatred and violence. To achieve this, the UN proposes actions that, although they may sound grand, begin small. These actions range from organizing intercultural encounters and working on the peaceful resolution of local conflicts to opening spaces for honest conversations between different people or groups.

The message is clear: Coexisting in peace means learning to enrich each other, not resigning oneself to the presence of others. In a world where divisive rhetoric can gain ground, this day reminds us that harmonious coexistence is a choice and an active endeavor.

This global commemoration raises the question: How can each of us contribute to coexistence that avoids conflict and generates true understanding from our own place? Rather than in grand declarations, the answer may lie in the small gestures of respect and openness we weave together day by day.
